Minimalism has been gaining popularity, from tiny houses to tiny wardrobes. Is it time to Marie Kondo your closet? Because these days, less is most definitely more.
As a lifelong lover of fashion and shopping, when I first heard the idea of pairing down the items in my closet I was quite skeptical, and frankly, terrified of tossing out my wardrobe. As I began the exercise, however, I came to realize just how little of my closet actually sees the light of day. I ultimately already had just a few pieces and outfits that I loved to wear, which is the foundation of building a capsule wardrobe.
What is a Capsule Wardrobe?
Put simply, a capsule collection is a curated closet of items that you absolutely adore and are versatile with each other. While not an exact science of course, each season consists of 30-40 items with a handful of transition pieces to help you go from one season to the next.
What are the benefits?
By shopping more thoughtfully and limiting adding to your wardrobe just once per season, as needed, you cut back on mindless buying and the cost that comes with that (both to your wallet and the planet). By narrowing your wardrobe you also become more aware of your own personal style, therefore, building a closet full of outfits you love to wear every day.
The whole idea is to feel joy from your outfits every single day.
Tips for Getting Started
- Don’t buy anything new for the first few months. Take that time to clean out your current closet and take note of the pieces you just cannot part with. This will help you to better understand your own personal style and help you in your quest for a better wardrobe.
- At the start of the next season, hone in on what items that seasonal closet could use. Think about items that pull your current items together and make your wardrobe more versatile.
- Shop quality, timeless, sustainably-made pieces as you add new items to your wardrobe. Buying quality clothing will save you money over time as you don’t have to replace your items as often (it’s also much better for the planet).
- Each season, redo the exercise of going through that seasonal capsule wardrobe and adding/ replacing as needed. Hopefully, over just a couple of seasons, you’ll have a closet full of items you are obsessed with.
Must-Have Sustainable Wardrobe Staples
