After successful meat-free launches in Europe, Hong Kong, and Canada, the world’s largest fast-food chain has confirmed it’s bringing a vegan burger to the U.S. market.

The “McPlant” will begin testing early next year.

In a statement from McDonald’s provided to USA Today, McDonald’s international president Ian Border said the McPlant foray would open up other menu categories. “In the future, McPlant could extend across a line of plant-based products including burgers, chicken-substitutes and breakfast sandwiches.”

Leading competitors Burger King, KFC, and Subway have all seen success with vegan meat launches. Burger King partnered with Impossible Foods for its popular Impossible Whopper. KFC and Subway have launched Beyond Meat products. A growing number of smaller chains including A&W Canada, White Castle, and Carl’s Jr. have all also launched vegan meat across their chains.

The fast-food giant made the burger itself after using Beyond Meat in its Canadian offering. “McPlant is crafted exclusively for McDonald’s, by McDonald’s,” Border said. Last month it partnered with OmniFoods for the meat-free pork options now available in Asia.

Consumers are eating less meat.

Growing Demand for Vegan Food

Other fast-food chains had seen success with their meat-free options, as consumers shift their eating habits. Author Kathy Freston launched a petition last year, urging McDonald’s to add its own. The petition now has more than 230,000 signatures.

“For years now consumers have been asking McDonald’s to add a plant-based burger to their menu in the United States. This development is extremely good news for the millions of people looking for healthier alternatives when they eat at McDonald’s, and a testament to the people power of those who’ve been asking McDonald’s executives for this change for years,” Freston said in a statement sent to Planet Shine. 

According to Freston, 70 percent of the world is actively reducing meat consumption. She applauded McDonald’s for the shift. “Now the hope is that this becomes bigger than just a few test markets, but a truly revolutionary change to McDonald’s menu all across the country and the globe.”
