A More Sustainable Brew

Carlsberg Group, the company that brews Carlsberg, Kronenbourg and Brooklyn among many others, is on a mission to become one of the leaders in sustainable brewing.

They’ve done two things recently that caught our eye.

Reducing Plastic Packaging

Carlsberg switched the packaging of their 6- and 8-packs, reducing the amount of plastic by 1,200 tonnes a year. That’s the equivalent of 60 million plastic bags.

Fully Recyclable Paper Bottles


In an industry first, Carlsberg just released a paper beer bottle. The new Green Fibre Bottle is made from sustainable sourced wood fibres and is 100% recyclable.

There are two prototypes, one with a thin recycled PET polymer film barrier, and the other with a 100% bio-based PEF polymer film barrier. Their ultimate goal is is fully bio-based bottle without any polymers.

While we are not completely there yet, the two prototypes are an important step towards realising our ultimate ambition of bringing this breakthrough to market.

But it’s not just packaging that they’re focusing on.

Their ambitious Together Towards ZERO sustainability programme has four key pillars.

Zero Carbon Footprint

By 2022, they will reduce their carbon emissions by 50% at the breweries, use 100% renewable electricity and achieve a 15% reduction of beer-in-hand carbon footprint. They want to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Zero Water Waste

As they say, ‘No water, no beer.’ And with water scarcity a growing topic, they know they need to conserve and use it wisely. By 2030, they will reduce water waste in their breweries by 50%. And they’ve recently released PU:REST – a beer brewed with purified waste water.

Zero Irresponsible Drinking

Carlsberg is taking their role in encouraging responsible drinking to the max, ensuring 100% distribution of alcohol-free beer. They’re also working on responsible drinking messagings and running campaigns with partners.

Zero Accident Culture

Health and safety are paramount and they’re working on an accident reduction scheme that will achieve zero lost-time accidents by 2030.
