Meet the woman-owned vegan skincare line using the healing benefits of seaweed

Every family has a mythology. And according to Jenefer Palmer, Founder of OSEA Malibu, her family’s mythology is that the ocean is the source of healing.

After her grandmother, Elsa, trained as one of America’s first female chiropractors in the 1920s, she fell and tore some ligaments in her leg. She had a dream that the ocean would heal her, so she began to swim in the freezing cold water off Long Island, New York and pack her leg and hip with the seaweed and algae she found there. As her leg improved, she incorporated seaweed in her chiropractor practice and kept swimming in the ocean everyday until she was in her 90s.

Jenefer and her daughter, Melissa, who joined her mother as the CEO of OSEA, have carried on Elsa’s intrepid spirit and belief in the healing properties of the natural world.

OSEA – which stands for Ocean, Sun, Earth and Atmosphere – is made by combining pure and organic bioavailable seaweed with steam distilled and cold pressed essential oils. There are no synthetic ingredients in the products and they are cruelty free and made with no animal derivatives.

That devotion to purity and organic ingredients led OSEA to be the first company to sign the Compact for Global Production of Safe Health and Beauty Products, an initiative from the Environmental Working Group. The aim is to ensure products are ‘free of chemicals that are known or strongly suspected of causing cancer, mutation or birth defects’.

Not only were they the first company to sign it, Jenefer and Melissa actively campaign across the States to lobby for safer skincare.

‘My ethos in life is to be kind because I think that kindness is such a powerful force in the universe.’

The company is also committed to an ethical and transparent supply chain, and they work with family or female-run collectives in local communities. For example, the seaweed – which helps with moisturising, anti-aging and tone perfecting – is hand-foraged as it migrates into the shallow waters off the coast of Patagonia.

Another family-inspired decision was to use recyclable glass bottles instead of plastic for the packaging. Jenefer’s father worked in the glass industry and worked to get the first bottle recycling bills passed in the 1960s and 1970s. She recalls him showing her a graph of how glass is endlessly recyclable, so it was only natural that she chose that for her packaging.
