7 Simple, Sustainable Ways to Make Your Bathroom Zero-Waste

7 Simple, Sustainable Ways to Make Your Bathroom Zero-Waste

The smallest room in the house can have one of the biggest impacts for the planet.

A couple of months ago I was cleaning out my bathroom, tossing old products, and was amazed at how it has accumulated over the years. I never realized that I had so many products that I never used or didn’t even need.

As I was recycling the bottles, I vowed to stop buying random beauty products and try to start making a lot on my own or finding better alternatives. I was embarrassed at how much plastic I had laying around, and just how much junk was piled in my drawers.

I will start out by saying, don’t try to do it all at once, you will just get overwhelmed.

What I am doing is every time I run out of a beauty product I currently have, I vow to make my own or replace it with a cleaner option.

Doing this one item at a time has really helped me take time to research each item and find recipes that will work for me both for the sake of the planet and also scouting out clean beauty ingredients.

These zero-waste bathroom essentials will get you started on the right track.

1. Reusable MakeUp Remover Cloths

I got some of these for Christmas and absolutely love them!  I just spray a little of my rose water toner on the cloth and they remove makeup so well.

I used to always have disposable makeup cloths with me but these are so much easier, cheaper and better for your skin and the environment.

2.  Glass bottles and jars

For the most part I just use glass containers I have laying around, but for some of the items I needed some better options.  I ordered a few glass spray bottles and a few glass jars.

These are great for homemade toner, perfume and aromatherapy sprays and the bottles are way cute!  Make sure to great some larger jars, too if you plan on making your own products or stopping at a zero-waste shop.

3. Biodegradable Makeup Sponge

As much as I love the useability of makeup sponges, I hated how fast I went through them as they are notoriously hard to clean. This biodegradable one takes care of that.

5.  Plastic-Free Bath Bombs

LUSH is known for its incredible plant-based products, recycled plastic containers, and growing amount of plastic-free options. And they are also known for their bath bombs, some of which are, ahem, not appropriate for all ages. Obviously, shopping in-store allows for total plastic-free shopping but they are also dedicated to eco-friendly packaging.

6.  Makeup Brushes

Make sure you are getting good quality and vegan brushes.  That’s right, a lot of brushes are made from horsehair or something similar, you’ll obviously want to avoid those. Most also have plastic handles, so stock up on plastic-free, sustainable ones next time you need replacements.
